Pc build question

Started by SpazzBucket., July 16, 2014, 01:51

SpazzBucket.

Ok so as you might know, my laptop isn't the best for gaming, I've looked at ones that are built already for over $1000, but I heard you can custom build your own for under $700. Whats your guy's opinions and suggestions? where should I start looking?

Do you want a laptop or desktop? I ask because you can build a more powerful desktop than laptop for the same price.
You can't really build your own laptop, you can but it's not at all practical. I know you can have them custom built for you with your specifications but not sure where.

I suggest you check out http://www.reddit.com/r/suggestalaptop if you really want a laptop.

Ok, desktop it is. Questions:
Budget?
Will you overclock your CPU?
What games do you want to run (just a few examples)?
Can you get a copy of Windows or do you need that included?
Monitor?
Keyboard/mouse?

Budget: $600-$900 (over $800 have to have some significant improvements from cheaper)
Overclock:Not if I don't have to, if it is cheaper and safe enough to overclock then I will
Games I want to run:BFH, Watch Dogs, AC4 on max settings at a good fps (>60)
Windows:I will need it to be included, prefer windows 7 over 8 if that is a better gaming option
Monitor:already have a 1920x1200 HP monitor
Keyboard/mouse:A decent keyboard with hotkeys, backlight and shallow keys (laptop style keyboard) don't need a super fancy mouse, maybe a few extra buttons depending on price

This is what I put together. Note: Does not include keyboard/mouse. The CPU cooler is optional, the CPU will come with a stock cooler. I only included it because the stock cooler sounds like a tornado. I can hear mine from across the hall. Windows 8 is supposed to run games slightly better than 7 but they are the same price so choose whichever you want. You could also swap the video card for a GTX 660. Mine runs most games on ultra @ 1080p @ 30-60 FPS depending on the game.

That looks like a decent setup, good price too, I guess this is finally a paycheck that won't be going into my car

Also, is there a way I could get all of my games or at least the saves from my laptop HDD to the new PC HDD? I would like to just transfer over everything but I don't want to have problems that the laptop has been having

Just open the laptop, take the hard drive out, and plug it into your new comp using the same cable. It wont be a usb cable, itll be a sata cable, plug that into your new pc motherboard, (unless you invest in a hard drive caddy, make it a portable one, or keep it in your desktop as another drive), and it should come up with 2 hard drives in windows.

I recommend trying to get a SSD on top of Hobo's build, you'll notice a difference in pretty much anything you do. I have a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO which I bought for £60, but maybe consider saving up for the 250GB model so you can put some games on it.

The CPU 'AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor' is great. My friend used* to have it. Ran everything he threw at it.

The GPU sounds 'dank' as Hobo would say :P

Why do you need the operating system if it's easy to activate it legally ( we dont give links to that) plus whay Semi-Modular power supply if you can buy None-Modular and safe some money pc case dosen't have window.

That's the price for a legal Windows OS. You can get codes cheaper from various places but generally the sellers are breaking Microsoft's TOS.
Semi-Modular PSUs allow you to add only cables you need, that helps with airflow which helps keep everything cooler.

My laptop's 750gb HDD only has 50gb of space left on it, I need the 1TB, 250gb won't be nearly enough, I'll fill it in a month xD
