New features:
Material Design:
A new UI instead of the same one every update.
Notifications:
Even less intrusive notifications. A way to control when you get notifications.
Battery:
Adding a longer battery life for all devices instead of lowering it like other operating systems.
Security:
Lock to apps so when you show someone a photo on your phone, they can't go through your texts. Encryption is enabled by default.
Runtime and Performance:
ART runtime. Up to 4x faster than Dalvik. Support for 64bit devices.
Tap & go: instant set up of your new Android phone or tablet by simply tapping it to your old one (requires NFC)

KitKat used less resources than previous versions of Android.
Lollipop uses ART runtime which increases performance.
