I've put loads more trees in so it doesnt look as empty, and I'm planning putting a few more shops at the end of this island. My end plan is to have four islands all connected up, with the entrance island, a housing island, an industrial island, and a general island with shops, a few houses generic buildings.

for being your first map, your coming right along but like Benny said, the rocks are a bit excessive and some of the trees as well

Try removing/changing the barriers around the gas station, right now you wouldnt be able to use them which is why it looks bad as its not useable
